There are several major Sonic hacks that utilize those two hardware addons (Sonic in Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic 4: Cybernetic Outbreak for 32X, and Sonic 1 Megamix and Sonic CD++ for Sega CD), and I'm sure as time goes on there will be more hacks using the significantly more powerful hardware for advanced 2D effects.
